You know what? Harry Reid is a massive douche

Harry Reid

Harry Reid: He looks like he wants to give me a Werther’s Original.

(As is George W. Bush, but most of us already knew that.)

This is just a quick heads up. The Bush Administration and his buddies in the Senate (e.g. Harry Reid) have been trying to aggressively push through the new FISA legislation. This bill would not only allow for the continuation of Bush’s warrantless eavesdropping, but would also give companies like AT&T immunity from the laws that the President and the NSA asked them to–and most likely did–break.

Lucky for us, Chris Dodd, Russ Feingold, and other senators have been fighting this off.

However, Harry Reid, the pleasant looking, grandfatherly figure and majority leader of the Senate, will be trying to force an end to the debate on Monday (1/28/08). Yes, the very same Harry Reid who–after already letting many of his Republican cohorts block legislation with silent filibusters–told Chris Dodd and others that they would have to perform a true filibuster when attempting to block this bill.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a letter that you can email to your respective members of the Senate in less than a minute. They also have phone numbers if you’d like to have a little more impact.

“Now is the time to urge your Senators to vote no on ‘cloture’ to keep the debate going!

Every time you’ve taken action to fight against immunity, it’s made a huge difference. In November, your calls and emails helped to ensure that the Senate Judiciary Committee did not include telecom amnesty in its surveillance bill, and in December your calls and emails helped convince Harry Reid to delay the vote until January. Both times, the pundits assumed we didn’t stand a chance, and both times we proved them wrong.” — EFF

On a personal note, I would rather that my senator was campaigning other senators on this issue, not campaigning for other state’s “right to vote.”

It’s assertive, ambitious, dramatic, and passionate. (Or so I’ve been told)

Anyway - aside from some tweaks to the underlying code and fixes for a few browsers, I’m deeming this site redesign as complete. I pondered waiting until the next CSS Reboot event to update the site, but decided against it. I wanted the redesign up as soon as possible.

Personally, I’m extremely pleased with how the design turned out, far more than I was with the last version.

Too much content occupied too little space in the old design. Upon reexamining all that material, it really became clear how unnecessary it was. So, we’ve removed a lot of that clutter, making the layout feel much more elegant. This means that eyeballs no longer scream in frustration as all sorts of stuff competes for their unwavering attention.

The whole site also feels much more harmonious. There always seemed to be some sort of infighting between the elements of the old design. I could never put my finger on what the cause of that battle was, but it bugged me to no end.

Along with redesigning the look of the site, we’ve also finally enabled a lot of functionality that was missing. Some of the biggest changes include…

  • The Gallery link no longer leads to the Use-Bombs Flickr profile. Instead we use the FAlbum plug-in by Elijah Cornell to integrate the gallery directly into the site.
  • The Video button is now more than a link to Google Video. The launch of our video section makes finding our film bits and pieces much easier.
  • We’ve launched a music section. With the help of the Flash Media Player, a person can play music directly from our site or download a copy. Although it only has material from Josh right now, I expect this section to grow quite a bit in the near future.
  • Link bubbles! I can’t get enough of the little speech bubbles that appear when you hover over the “Recommended” links. They illustrate XFN relationships, show a thumbnail of the linked site, and give a description.
  • Although the site will still stretch to fill the screen of longer windows, it will now only do so up to a maximum width.
  • We’ve carried a set of text based ads on this site for a good while. (They’re a little more prominent since the redesign.) We’ve also recommended Firefox or Opera as long as I can remember. As a note of disclosure, I finally figured it was time we sign up for a Google AdSense “Get Firefox” link. Don’t worry, you’ll only see it if you’re using Internet Explorer.

Some have asked me about the lower right hand portion of the site, which we had set aside for del.icio.us links in the past. I still plan to gather those links together and post them every few days or every week. However, instead of keeping them in their own list I will be posting them as a standard post.

Enjoy the update and let me know about any issues you have (with operating system and browser versions please)!

Note: I know the video page looks goofy on Internet Explorer 6. Live with it or, like I said, go get a browser with far fewer bugs! I’ll get to it when and if I have the energy left in me to try and debug another page for that horrid software. Users of Internet Explorer 6 and below: You’re lucky I’m sending a style to you at all!

<rant>I want to make it perfectly clear that Internet Explorer is generally a bad browser; even version 7. This statement is not just personal opinion, but based on technical facts. I have always affirmed this and will continue to until they fix some very paramount rendering issues. Migrating, at least for the time being, is most likely your own good!</rant>

Good News

Arion Londraville - Saturday, 22nd July 2006

So, I’ve finally come bearing good news. My main computer and two others are now working again. This means that there should be some more regular posting again. Expect the humor to be vast.

To get my computer working again required buying a number of new parts and gut the system completely. Although the exterior case is the same, the interior is mostly new. There is a new motherboard (DFI LAN Party nF4 Ultra), processor (Athlon 64 3800+ Venice), video card (XFX Geforce 7950GX2), power supply (600W), and fans (Thermaltake). As one may guess, the system is running much better now, but I am beginning to think it’s just about time to reinstall the OS.

Even more good news! I’ve gone through and uploaded photos of our group from Roaring 20’s Weekend in Alexandria Bay. Have some summer time fun by going to the Gallery link above.
